Undisputed super featherweight world champion Baumgardner is set to put her championship status on the line on November 14 in the co-main event of the Jake Paul vs Tank Davis card in Miami, Florida, but in doing so, she’ll be dropping one of her world titles.
That’s because Baumgardner’s upcoming fight with Canada’s Leila Beaudoin will be contested over 12 three-minute rounds, rather than the 10 two-minute-round format previously used for women’s title fights.
While the other sanctioning bodies permit the fight to take place at 12 three-minute rounds, WBC’s rules do not, so Baumgardner has taken the decision to drop the WBC title and move forward with the bout, which will be run under the same round format as men’s world title fights.
Speaking at a press conference in Miami to promote her fight, Baumgardner said that it was time that women’s boxing was treated in the same way as their male counterparts, and she was prepared to drop the WBC belt to support that view.

“I have and will always believe that my responsibility as a champion is to push the sport forward,” she explained.
“Women in boxing deserve equal opportunities, respect, and rules as men.
“Like Amanda Serrano and many other great champions before me, I believe women should have the choice to compete under the same rules as men, 12 rounds, three minutes per round. I have chosen to move forward in my career under those terms.
“My next championship fight will take place under those rules, and since the WBC does not currently allow women to fight under those terms, I’ve made the difficult decision to vacate my WBC title.
“I respect the WBC and want to thank the WBC for all the support they’ve given me throughout my career. Becoming their champion was a career-defining honor, and I look forward to and plan to one day fight for a WBC belt again.
“For now, I am focused on continuing to break barriers for women’s boxing and showing the world that we are every bit as capable as the men when we step through those ropes.”

Baumgardner’s career stands at 16-1, with seven knockouts, and on November 14 she’ll take on Beaudoin, who is ranked second in the world by the IBF, and third in the world by the WBO and WBA. The Canadian contender will enter the bout with a record of 13-1, with two KOs, and was in agreement with the champion’s view about the round format.
“They’re gonna see why we deserve to do three-minute rounds, and why we belong here,” she said.
The move to stage the fight over the longer distance was praised by Jake Paul who, in addition to starring in the main event, is also the co-promoter of the event through his company Most Valuable Promotions.

He paid tribute to both women ahead of the fight, saying, “Well, first of all, it’s just incredible that they’re doing 12 three-minute rounds. That’s some badass s**t right there.
“Both fighters are incredible, but I just know that Alycia, this is her moment. This is gonna be her breakout performance. And you know, I hate to choose sides as I am the promoter, but I think Alycia is gonna win.”
