Headlining the event was former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, who delivered an outstanding performance to hand Polish grappler Mateusz Gamrot the first stoppage defeat of his career, finishing him in the second round via face-crank submission.
There was also a huge win in the career of former UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo, who snapped a two-fight skid to end the six-fight win streak of surging bantamweight Montel Jackson in the co-main event.
The fight card also saw big wins for Brazil’s Jafel Filho, Vitor Petrino, Bia Mesquita, Lucas Rocha, Julia Polastri and Luan Lacerda, as they each claimed victories on the preliminary card.
The main card also saw Spain’s Joel Alvarez announce his arrival in the UFC’s welterweight division following his move up from lightweight, as he dominated Vicente Luque in a fight that could, and probably should, have been stopped in the opening round. And Portuguese heavyweight Mario Pinto made a big statement as he stopped Jhonata Diniz in the second round, then gave a superb post-fight interview.
Also on the main card, Kaan Ofli silenced the Brazilian crowd with a first-round submission finish of Ricardo Ramos.
On this week’s episode of the RDX Sports Podcast, Simon Head recaps the action from Rio, and also takes a look back at the Matchroom Boxing event in England, as Arslanbek Makhmudov defeated local hero Dave Allen in front of a packed house in Sheffield.
