Chimaev’s total dominance of one of the toughest middleweights of this era showed just how tough his wrestling and top game really are to deal with, as he left Du Plessis helpless on the mat each and every round to earn scores of 50-44 on all three scorecards.
But that wasn’t the only big performance at United Center at UFC 319. Lerone Murphy may well have punched his ticket to a title showdown with Alexander Volkanovski after his spinning back-elbow KO of the much-hyped debuting former Bellator star Aaron Pico, while at welterweight, Fighting Nerds star Carlos Prates bounced back into the win column in spectacular fashion with a stunning spinning back-elbow KO of his own as he finished Geoff Neal in the last second of the first round.
Welterweight star Michael “Venom” Page showed that he’s a serious threat at middleweight as he defeated former title challenger Jared Cannonier on the scorecards, and there was a huge upset victory for former flyweight title challenger Tim Elliott, who handed former Rizin FF bantamweight champ Kai Asakura his second successive defeat in the UFC, courtesy of a guillotine choke.
On this episode of the RDX Sports Podcast, editor-in-chief Simon Head recaps all of the main card action from UFC 319 as he shares his post-fight takeaways from the event. He also runs down the rest of the card’s results, and takes a look back at the PFL World Tournament event in Charlotte, North Carolina, as Alfie Davis and Liz Carmouche both captured tournament gold.
