Ankalaev is likely to face Pereira in an immediate rematch later this year as the light heavyweight title picture stays paused on these two fighters, but Pereira losing the title may also have a knock-on effect on the heavyweight championship picture, too.
Jon Jones has stated that his preference was to face Alex Pereira in his next fight, but the UFC, and the fans, have made clear that the fight to make is the heavyweight title unification bout between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall.
But now, with Pereira no longer the light heavyweight champion, any weight attached to him challenging for the heavyweight title over Aspinall is all but gone, leaving Jones with just one choice: face Aspinall, or vacate the title.
