The Swedish veteran returns after three years away, moving up to middleweight with enhanced power and renewed purpose. But this comeback carries unique pressure: spoiling the retirement party of one of his closest friends in the sport.
Kadestam and Aung La N Sang built their friendship during their championship reigns, developing mutual respect that goes beyond typical competitor relationships. Now that friendship faces its ultimate test inside the ring.
“We have been friends for quite a while now. But I’m a big fan of him, too,” said Kadestam.
“I think he’s a great fighter, and he’s done it all. Whether he is my opponent or not, respect goes beyond the stage.”
The former ONE welterweight MMA world champion has stopped numerous opponents under the ONE banner through knockout or submission. His move to middleweight should add even more power to his already dangerous striking arsenal, creating serious problems for his upcoming foe.
But Aung La N Sang isn’t any opponent. The Myanmar legend carries 15 knockouts on his record and has held titles in two weight classes. Athletes often find extra motivation in their final fights, and Aung La N Sang has championship experience that younger fighters can’t match.
Kadestam understands the challenge ahead. His friend won’t simply roll over for a ceremonial send-off.
“I’m sure he’s coming in well prepared, in excellent condition, and I know he doesn’t want to lose his last fight, so I’m prepared,” he said.
“He’s not some new guy getting used to the fight scene. Again, he has experience, so I think he’d be dangerous.”
The tactical dynamics create fascinating possibilities. Kadestam brings fresh power at a new weight class, while Aung La N Sang carries the desperation of someone who knows redemption opportunities no longer exist. Both men possess knockout ability that could end the contest at any moment.
For Kadestam, this represents more than a comeback fight. It’s a chance to establish himself as a middleweight contender while participating in MMA history. His preparation and enhanced physicality suggest someone ready to capitalize on this unique opportunity.
The friendship adds emotional complexity, but Kadestam remains focused on his professional obligations. Respect doesn’t change his finishing instincts or competitive drive.
“I’m gonna be sticking to [my knockout power] in this fight against Aung La,” he said.
“It should be better. I’ve been waiting to be back in action, so I’m ready to show my strengthened striking in this fight.”
