Taylor claimed a split-decision win over Serrano in their first meeting back in 2022 as she retained her undisputed lightweight titles at Madison Square Garden. Then, in the rematch two and a half years later at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Taylor prevailed again, this time via unanimous decision, though there was a degree of post-fight controversy after Serrano’s camp accused Taylor of leading with the head during her victory.
However, there was no such controversy in the third fight, as Taylor switched tactics and, instead of pressing forward, worked off the back foot, and smartly outboxed Serrano, who adopted a similar back-foot strategy.
It meant the amount of punches landed was markedly lower than in their last meeting, with both women landing 70 shots each, though Taylor’s successes were at a significantly better economy rate.
But while the total number of punches landed may have been even at the end of the 12-round bout, it was Taylor’s work that secured more rounds on the judges’ scorecards, as she took the victory via majority decision. Two judges scored the bout 97-93 in Taylor’s favour, with the remaining judge scoring the fight level at 95-95.
The night, which featured a plethora of world title fights, with a total of 17 championships contested acros five fights in a showcase of the very best of women’s boxing.
Undisputed women’s super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner outpointed Spain’s interim champ Jennifer Miranda to retain her undisputed status at 130 pounds, while Shadasia Green scored an upset victory over Savannah Marshall to finish the night holding The Ring, IBF and WBO women’s super middleweight belts.
Ellie Scotney outpointed Yamileth Mercado for the unified Ring, WBC, IBF and WBO super bantamweight title, and Cherneka Johnson claimed a doctor-stoppage TKO victory over Shurretta Metcalf for the undisputed women’s bantamweight crown.
