Jan Walter - A Young Enthusiastic Calisthenics Athlete

One of these highly gifted individuals is Calisthenics athlete Jan Walter, who recently participated in the ISF Open World Street Lifting Championship 2022 and won 1st prize in the juniors category. Let’s have an insightful chat with the young champ and share his story to all Calisthenics fans out there:

What or who inspired you to get into the sport?

For me it was a friend of mine. He inspired me, back when I used to play soccer with him. I liked his body build and asked him questions regarding how he maintains his physique. So he told me he does calisthenics. I had never heard of it before but he asked me if I wanted to join him so I agreed and we started working out together. So for me that was a new start and that’s how I got into the sport.

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?

I’d say nothing special but just be remembered as a guy who is humble and someone who truly believed in what he did. Just a regular guy but definitely someone down to earth.

If you could advise a younger version of yourself about Calisthenics – what would it be?

I still remember that back then when I was in the searching phase of my life, I searched for the perfect workout routine, perfect exercises and perfect training programs. So the mindset I lacked before was that rather than searching for the perfect way, we must focus on staying consistent throughout the process. Which later, I kind of did and now I never really quit. So my advice would be to stay consistent and worry less regarding finding the perfect way of doing everything.

Is calisthenics a way of life for you? Or something you just enjoy doing?

Well, I guess at first I started calisthenics like a hobby, something you love to do. But when you reach an intermediate or advance level, you then start focusing on pushing yourself further into the sport. And that’s when you start learning a lot of things, even outside your training. So in that way the sport becomes like a way of life.

What bodyweight exercise is your favorite?

Well at the moment, I don’t really train with bodyweight exercises. Nearly everything I do is weighted and my favorite exercise would be the dip exercise. Additionally, I have always been good at push and pull exercises. But I enjoy push exercises a bit more. However, when talking in terms of just bodyweight exercises, I think I would still go for dip.

What does Move, Improve, Evolve mean to you?

I would say it is also, in one way or another, a way of life. Something you really implement in almost everything you do. Regardless of what you want to do, the first important step would be to move forward and get into action. Once you’ve done that, you reflect and focus on what you can do better. So that’s what improving is all about. And in other words, with all this happening in your life you eventually evolve. It’s not just about training but anything you do in life requires the same method of moving, improving and evolving.
