Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been named as one of the six team managers ahead of the new season, with his first move as team manager seeing him appoint his longtime coach Javier Mendez as his team’s head coach.
In addition to coaching Velasquez to the undisputed UFC heavyweight title, Mendez has also masterminded the championship successes of Daniel Cormier, Khabib Nurmagomedov and, most recently, Islam Makhachev, via his world-renowned gym in San Jose, California, American Kickboxing Academy.
The GFL’s inaugural draft is set to take place on January 24, where Velasquez will be looking to build his roster for the upcoming season. However, as MMA Junkie reports, he is also due be sentenced that day in Santa Clara County for a number of charges, including attempted murder, assault with a firearm and assault with a deadly weapon. He has been released on bail since November 2022.
