Ranked featherweights went head-to-head in the main event of UFC Vegas 110 at the UFC APEX, as Steve Garcia produced another superb performance to stop fellow contender David Onama in the first round.
Garcia showcased his dangerous striking and quickly found a home for his shots as he pushed Onama onto the back foot from the opening exchange. And the Albuquerque native eventually broke through as he stung Onama with a series of big shots, then kept the pressure on to eventually stop his man at the 3:34 mark in the opening round.
After his victory, Garcia made clear his intention to compete against bigger-name opposition, and while he maintained his quest to climb the featherweight ranks, he also called for a matchup against BMF champion, and former featherweight king, Max Holloway.
In the co-main event, Waldo Cortes Acosta overcame a nasty eye-poke – and a near-TKO finish – to knock out Croatia’s Ante Delija in their heavyweight clash.
It looked like Delija had stopped Cortes Acosta with strikes mid-way through the first round. But referee Mark Smith suspected an eye poke and paused the action to allow the cageside officials to check the instant replay, which backed up his assessment.
After Cortes Acosta was given time to recover, he came out of his corner clearly angry and with a point to prove, and he quickly connected with a big shot that dropped Delija to the mat. A series of heavy follow-up strikes forced the finish as “Salsa Boy” defended his ranking and kept him in the mix in the UFC’s heavyweight top 10.
Also on the card, Jeremiah Wells returned from a lengthy layoff to outpoint Themba Gorimbo in their welterweight matchup, while Yadier del Valla submitted Isaac Dulgarian in the first round.
That finish capped a run of four successive submission finishes, with Charles Radtke, Allan Nascimento and Billy Elekana all claiming submission wins.
