“The General” achieved both goals when he successfully defended his crown against #1-ranked contender Wei Rui last Thursday, 20th February, inside Doha, Qatar’s Lusail Sports Arena.
Last September at ONE 168, Haggerty relinquished the bantamweight Muay Thai crown to reigning two-sport ONE World Champion Superlek Kiatmoo9 in heartbreaking fashion. So, he was admittedly trepidatious ahead of his return.
But after settling his nerves, the British brawler found the flow he needed to soar to a convincing unanimous decision win, which he credited to his development and the guidance he received from his trainers.
“I just didn’t want to get knocked out in 49 seconds again. I learn from my mistakes. Me and my coach, my team, we went back to the drawing board. I just didn’t want to rush in. Take our time and get the game plan right,” Haggerty said.
“The first round was a bit rocky. I need a bit of punches to the face to get myself going. But, yeah, I enjoyed it in there. Strategic-wise, we stuck to the game plan. I’m happy how it went, and I can’t wait to get back in there.”
Haggerty’s discipline and determination have helped him become one of the biggest stars in all of combat sports.
Had he won his bout against Superlek, the 28-year-old planned to rest and recuperate. But with the defeat on his slate, he couldn’t relax until he returned to the winners’ column.
With that now done, Haggerty may kick back and bask in the glory. However, he also wants to build on his legacy, so the London native says he’ll be ready for any and all comers when ONE comes calling.
“I’m just going to celebrate now. Have a little bit of a chill time. I’ll still go back to training, but whatever ONE Championship or Chatri wants to give me, then obviously, I’m here to take it,” Haggerty said.
“I’ve been in there with the likes of Superlek twice, Rodtang twice. I don’t shy away from any fight. So whatever gives the fans entertainment, I’m here to put it on.”
