Why was Floyd Mayweather vs. Aaron Chalmers Such a Big Fight?
It wasn’t really a big event even for the UK boxing fans who found cheap last-minute tickets being sold from ticket vendor websites. Fans were being offered heavily discounted tickets to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s exhibition against Aaron Chalmers just hours before the bout on Saturday night amid reports of empty seats at the O2 Arena.
However, Floyd Mayweather put on a show in his UK debut, dominating his exhibition bout with MMA fighter and TV star Aaron Chalmers. The Champ made Aaron dance without looking paced at any point, regardless Chalmers showed up for a bout and gave “Money” Mayweather as hard a time as possible. It was the “Pretty Boy, Money” Mayweather show but the night was marred with a poor undercard and a lackluster crowd at The O2.
“Pretty Boy” Floyd Stands Tall
The 50-0 legend put his elite boxing skills on full show but also entertained the London crowd, doing a 360 spin in the middle of a round and dancing with the ring girls. Mayweather, 46, made his long-awaited debut appearance in a UK ring on Saturday but despite that, the fight failed to drum up much interest or attention and it was reflected in the attendance on the night.
A disappointing audience was not addressed however in the post fight, as the the crowd somewhat filled the arena for the main event. Although during the undercard the arena was relatively empty.
“I would like to thank all the fans in the UK. The fans are unbelievable,’ he said. ‘This guy is tough as nails, we had a chance to come together. I came to entertain the people and I’m glad I came. I have a lot of experience. He has to continue to work hard and believe in himself. He’s got a tough chin – anything is possible.”
Floyd was fighting against former Geordie Shore and British reality tv star Chalmers, the 50-0 former champion of the world appeared to take the occasion very casually as he toyed with his opponent for much of the eight-round fight.
The unbeaten American has engaged in a series of extremely lucrative exhibition fights since his retirement in 2017, which have largely taken place in the Middle East. The ‘Royal Pain’ event was painfully delayed after poor attendance at the start of proceedings combined with reports of thousands of unsold tickets at the O2 Arena.

Aaron Chalmers said:
“He caught us clean on the chin in the second round and it did wake me up a lot, but he’s just unbelievable. That’s one to tell the grandkids,” he said. “We got as many sparring partners in but you can’t get anyone in to do what Floyd does. The win for me was to get to the eighth round and that’s what I did. Thanks to Floyd and his team I’m now in the mix for KSI and Jake Paul.”
Chalmers put on a decent effort in front of Mayweather but there was no real match up of their boxing talent as Pretty Boy Floyd would showboat and entertain the fans all the while calculating every single one of Aaron Chalmers’ punches.
That was the major selling point of this exhibition bout against Aaron Chalmers, the reality TV star-turned-fighter who stepped in for kickboxer Liam Harrison. But the major selling point ended up being a minor one, as Mayweather – sporting Union Jack shorts – toyed with and taunted Chalmers across eight two-minute rounds, in front of an underwhelming and underwhelmed audience in the English capital.
Maybe the next Money Mayweather Exhibition fight gets more traction in the UK, but the global viewing numbers definitely were in favor of Jake Paul and Tommy Fury for “The Truth” of the WBC’s Diriyah Belt on the following night. It was an entertaining fight and we’re sure the TBE Legend will make his rounds in the UK again.
